Mumps is doing the rounds in our community so this is a guide on what it is, what to look out for and how to treat it.

WHAT IS MUMPS?

Mumps is an infection caused by a virus. It affects the parotid glands, salivary glands below and in front of both ears.

It can affect one or both glands and is spread through contact with saliva or mucous through coughing, sneezing, or contact with a contaminated surface.

What are the signs and symptoms of mumps?

Symptoms typically present 2-3 weeks after exposure to the virus and there may be no symptoms.

Flu-like symptoms usually appear first and include:

• Headache

• Fever

• Tiredness

• Muscle aches and pains

• Loss of appetite

These symptoms are typically followed a few days later by

• Swollen and painful glands

• Mumps is contagious up to 5 days after the swelling occurs

How to treat mumps?

Mumps has no specific treatment or cure so treatment includes managing the symptoms and isolating. Most symptoms improve in 3-10 days.

• Rest

• Analgesia for pain

• Cold or warm compress

• Drinking plenty of fluids

• Eating foods that don’t require much chewing

• Avoid sour drinks
